Time for a new sports update for 2022. The covid virus continues to have a big impact on sports. A few games have been cancelled, but a lot of players have missed games because of covid-related problems this past year in all sports. The good news is that fans have returned to watching the games with no limited attendance in person wearing face masks. It is also good to watch games on TV with people cheering at the games. I personally have not been to any sporting event the past two years.
The Washington Nationals won the World Series in 2019,but had another bad 2021 season and missed the playoffs for the second year in a row. The Nats have lost several players and traded Max Scherzer, Trea Turner and other semi-starts for prospects during last season. They still have not found a third basemen. They have a sensational Juan Soto coming off almost winning the NL batting title(again) in 2021, losing to the traded Trea Turner. The Nats only proven starters are Steven Strasburg and Pat Corbin, and Strasburg was injured most of last year. They have added arms to the bullpen,but need better starters. This coming season will be hard because NL East is very strong this season.
The Washington Redskins football team finally have a good head coach in Ron Rivera,but missed the playoffs this past season. They officially got rid of "Redskins" and were just called the "Washington Football Team" this season. They are getting a new nickname for next season. They have a good defense and some very good receivers on offence, but still need a quarterback. The team has several good young players on both offense and defense. They had a lot of injuries and covid-related game misses this past season and just missed the playoffs.
The Washington Wizards traded Wes Westbrook which has helped the team a lot. They have a new very good coach in Wes Unseld, Jr. They are playing great this season and should make the playoffs this year. The Wizards are building a very good and young team with good depth and should continue to get better.
The Washington Capitals won the Stanley Cup in 2019(yes!!! finally!!), and are really good(again) this season, and should be in the playoffs again. Hopefully they get on a run during the playoffs like 2019 and win another Stanley Cup. Alex Ovetchkin had another great season and keeps getting better with age,and is having a great year so far this season.
In college sports, the Maryland Terps football team had a winning(barely) season with their head coach Mike Locksley. They also got a bowl bid and won the bowl game. The Terps have a good passing game and great receivers. Defense has to get better. The Terps had another good recruiting season again this year,but need to show improvement or won't keep recruiting good.
The Maryland Terps basketball team got off to a great start last season and made the NCAA playoffs but lost in the second round. This year the Terps were ranked in top 20 pre-season,but got off to a bad start and fired their coach. So, waiting to see who they hire as coach for next season because this looks like a loss for the season.
The Maryland Terps baseball team was better last season, but still did not make the College World Series playoffs. They have a good young coach and had another great recruiting class this year. As usual, the Maryland Terps have good teams in both women and men in the minor sports of Lacrosse, soccer and Field Hockey, but no national titles the past year, but came close in Men's Lacrosse. Both the women's gymnastics and volleyball team have gotten better each year with good young coaches and good recruiting classes.
